Snackspert’s week: ‘The Friet Wally is one big disappointment’

kimchi wally friet

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his life, suspects there’s more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week.

Without a doubt divine
Hot chick’n vegan burger and Szechuan Chicken Fries, Grizzl Amsterdam

I remember someone advising me against going to Grizzl in Amsterdam a while ago, and although I listened, now that Grizzl seems to have been revamped, I’d really like to give it a chance. The new menu doesn’t sound too bad, either: more variety in (meat) burgers and more vegetarian and vegan options. That’s partly why I chose an order that’s interesting for both vegans and meat eaters: a hot chick’n vegan burger and some very sexy (sorry, I’m just calling it what it is) Szechuan Chicken Fries with quite a bit of melted cheddar, as you can see.
Why not? I might as well be fat and happy. The burger pleasantly surprises me: besides looking great, it’s top-notch on the inside too. Good, crispy fake chicken that isn’t dry at all, a very nice sauce combined with sriracha (I’m noticing I’m pretty easy to win over with sriracha), good firm pickles and jalapeños that provide a tropical bite. Absolutely great. The fries with chicken and melted cheddar look like a movie that starts with a pizza delivery driver and ends with a very satisfied pizza delivery driver, if you know what I mean. Tasty chicken, lots of onions, good crispy fries—bring it on. One downside, though: far too much cheese sauce. A little too much of a good thing. As a wise woman once said: anything with ‘too’ in front of it isn’t good. And so it is. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Chicken fingers, Mora

Okay, let me start right away with one major annoyance: kipfingers. You write ‘kip’ in Dutch, but ‘fingers’ in English? Hey Mora, that’s not okay, is it? Then call them chicken fingers or just kipvingers. Let me know when the change has been made, okay? Because there’s little wrong with the product itself; this is simply tasty. Not an especially distinctive chicken flavor, just the flavor you expect from snack chicken. Add a little chili sauce or mix mayonnaise with sriracha—it all works. It’s not Roderick from the class, who gets a solid 9 on a test without studying; it’s more like Tom, who gets a six and then starts cheering. And that’s perfectly fine. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Food for the trash

Wally Burger (tasty) and Friet Wally (disgusting), Restaurant Wally in Nijmegen

Restaurant Wally is supposedly one of the better burger joints around Nijmegen. At least, when I was there, I was recommended it several times—but there were also a few dissatisfied people in my DMs. So it was an interesting place to visit. At Wally in Nijmegen, I did eat a very tasty burger: the Wally Burger with delicious bacon, a pickle and ‘special’ Wally sauce. It reminded me a little of creamy chipotle sauce, although I could of course be wrong. The bun is made in their own bakery, and you can taste it: not too dry, wonderfully soft, but with a slight crispy bite that feels great in your mouth. And I mustn’t forget the fresh meat: top quality. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Unfortunately, it’s not all a hooray-I’m-eating-delicious-food atmosphere here, because the Friet Wally is one big disappointment. Fries with cheese, Wally sauce and kimchi. But guys, this really isn’t kimchi. It’s just sauerkraut, as you can already guess from the photo. If this is kimchi, then sushi comes from Belgium—and yes, you know that’s nonsense. Even the chef said it was kimchi and that their sauerkraut tasted ‘different’. Then I pray for that chef, because I really would look up how to make real kimchi. And besides: sauerkraut on top of your fries? Nahhhhhh. Way too watery, too. ⭐️⭐️
