Steakhouse changes rules after refusing to pay guest who completed 4,500-calorie challenge

You’ve probably seen those challenges online; if you can eat a gigantic amount of something in a restaurant, you get it for free. And sometimes they throw in a free T-shirt and/or a place in The Hall of Fame. You mainly find these kinds of challenges in America and England, where they’re still very popular. But the rules do need to be clear, and that’s where Cattlemans Steakhouse in Devon (England) got things a little wrong.

And Dan, an Englishman, wasn’t too happy about that. He went there to take on the 4,500-calorie challenge; if he finished his plate within the allotted time, he would win £50. If he didn’t manage it, he would have to pay £50 to the restaurant.

‘That wasn’t the deal!’

What do you get on your plate? According to the menu, that’s chips, onion rings, a steak, gammon, four sausages, three chicken wings, a chicken breast and a cheeseburger. But what did Dan get? Exactly that, but with something extra: a side salad he hadn’t asked for. And as it happens, he absolutely hates salad. All that meat, the portion of chips and the onion rings: not a single problem.

But Dan drew the line at the salad. And he didn’t eat it.

Second attempt

And Cattlemans Steakhouse was uncompromising: you only get the £50 if you eat the entire plate, including the salad — even though he didn’t know beforehand that he would be getting it. The whole internet then descended on the restaurant, because surely the challenge isn’t about the salad? In the end, Cattlemans Steakhouse felt bad about it too and invited Dan — free of charge — for a second attempt. So he was allowed to devour 4,500 calories again, within an hour, this time without salad.

And I probably don’t need to tell you, but indeed: this turned out to be no problem at all for Dan.
