Stop crying: this is the very first tearless sweet onion

Uit-Favorflav

Chop an onion… and the tears are already streaming down your cheeks. Every trick has been tried, but nothing helps: when you cut onions, you simply have to cry. Or do you? In America, the first tearless onions are on the market—the result of thirty years of intensive research.

Cutting onions under water, keeping your knife razor-sharp, leaving the tap running while cutting onions or even entering the kitchen wearing swimming goggles: honestly, we’ve tried everything to avoid watery eyes when cutting onions. It’s inevitable: when you cut onions, a gas called syn-propanethial-S-oxide is released. It reacts with the moisture in your eyes, causing them to water. There’s nothing you can do about it. If you wear glasses, it bothers you a little less, but you still feel the tears sting and your eyes burn when you have to chop an onion.

Eat raw

But these new onions don’t have that effect. They’re called Sunions and have already been available in America for two years. At the beginning of this year, they also appeared in supermarkets in Great Britain. They’re sweet, you can eat them raw, and according to the website, they’re delicious in stews, salads, soup and stir-fries.

Natural process

The new onions are the result of thirty years of research by BASF, a chemical company. Contrary to what you might think, the onions are not genetically modified. No, the researchers spent years crossbreeding onion varieties until they arrived at one that does not release that specific gas.
