Stop the presses: HEMA hotdog ice cream is here
Ice cream parlour IJs van Matthijs isn’t afraid of new things. So of course you can come here for a scoop of vanilla, pistachio, lemon… But that’s not why we’re here. No no, we’re here for hotdog ice cream. And not just any hotdog ice cream. If you’re going to do this, you have to do it properly, of course: it’s HEMA hotdog ice cream. Do we want to try it? Erm… YES!
You’ll find this ice cream parlour in Leiden, and you can imagine that owner Matthijs is getting quite a lot of attention because of this unusual ice cream flavour. He’s used to it by now, because this is the same ice cream parlour that previously came up with the BigMac flavour. Well, to be completely honest: as a big McDonald’s fan, I also wanted to try that one. Unfortunately, the whole thing didn’t go ahead, because Maccie was a little less enamoured with the campaign. Spoilsports. HEMA, on the other hand, is very enthusiastic and has become the official supplier of the hotdog ingredients. The result: real HEMA hotdogs as ice cream.
But is it actually tasty?
“I have customers who come to Leiden especially to taste my ice cream, and I’ve never heard anyone say they find it disgusting,” Matthijs told Hart van Nederland. In terms of texture, here’s what we can expect: ice-cold pieces of meat and bread throughout the ice cream. I’m the kind of person who always wants two scoops, so I still need to think carefully about which flavour I’m going to mix this with… Hey Matthijs, what do you think of mustard ice cream?
We’ll have to wait until next year, because that’s when he’ll come up with a new ‘crazy’ flavour. Last year it was BigMac, now it’s HEMA hotdog, and next year… Steak tartare? Falafel sandwich? Shawarma?
