Super tip: making kale chips in the Airfryer

Boerenkoolchips

Who thought kale could only be used in stamppot… Na-ah. In pasta, in pesto, in a vlaai: this green cabbage is more versatile than you think. And what about kale chips? Deep-frying kale may not be that healthy, but there is a way to make healthier kale chips. Bake them in the Airfryer!

Now that’s a perfect example of snacking without the guilt.

Massage away

Kale chips from the Airfryer: they’re really super simple. Here, we’re starting with 250 grams of fresh kale leaves. It’s important to cut the leaves well away from the stems, so you don’t end up with tough stalks among your chips. You should also coat the torn leaves thoroughly with oil. Did you know that this gives kale leaves a better texture and flavor? Put the leaves in a bowl, pour a tablespoon of oil over them, and then ‘massage’ the oil into the leaves by squeezing them. Make sure all the leaves are covered with a thin layer of oil.

You can season the kale however you like. The tastiest option is to add something salty and something acidic. This creates more balance with the bitterness of the kale. A great acidic addition is some lemon juice or apple cider vinegar. As for salt, you can keep it simple with regular salt, or use a Cajun spice mix, for example. Whatever you like best with chips. Massage the acid and salt in the same way you did the oil. Also delicious: add some Parmesan cheese.

Ready? Time to bake! You’ll get the best result if you place just one layer of kale leaves in your Airfryer basket at a time. This allows the leaves to dry as thoroughly as possible in the appliance. Set the Airfryer to 200 degrees and bake the chips for about 4 minutes. Check halfway through so you can keep a close eye on the drying process. That’s all. You can dip them in your favorite dipping sauce, but that might make them a little less healthy. Oh well… A snack moment is allowed to be a real snack moment too, right?

And then… enjoy!
