Supermarket staff on: how we can make things easier for them

If there’s a group that deserves a round of applause besides healthcare workers, it’s supermarket employees. Man, they’ve been through a lot lately. Some of it fun, some of it less so. We were curious about their stories, so we asked them a few questions. This time: how can we make things a little easier for supermarket employees?

Face mask bravado
“Realize that wearing a face mask isn’t a free pass to stop keeping your distance. And anyway: we’d like to keep our distance too, so just ask if you can get by and we’ll gladly step aside.”
Rules
“At the entrance to the store, we have a sign with all the rules. If people simply follow them, there’s nothing to worry about.”
Coughing
“There are customers who stand there coughing extensively. Sometimes right near us. I don’t really dare say anything about it, but recently another customer stood up for me. That was really nice.”
Let go of me
“Please don’t keep grabbing my arm whenever you have a question!”
When it’s gone, it’s gone
“When all the dozens of shelves of pasta and pasta sauces are empty, please stop asking whether we still have some in the back.”
Listen
“Accept what we tell you. Don’t ask for products if they’re no longer on the shelves—we’re restocking everything as quickly as we can and don’t have time to keep going to the back to check something. If everyone shops calmly and doesn’t hoard, that won’t be necessary either.”
In short
“Keep your distance from employees, follow the house rules set by your supermarket and show understanding for the situation everyone finds themselves in.”
Finally
“And a thank-you for our efforts these days is, of course, always appreciated!”
