Tacos are the latest French food craze

Boeuf Bourguignon, steak tartare, tarte tatin and that wine, oh, that wine! France has plenty to offer food lovers. One savvy journalist discovered the latest French snack: tacos. No, this has nothing to do with Mexican tacos; it’s completely different! To be honest, it reminds us a little of the Dutch… kapsalon.

Reporter Eline Huisman moved to France to work there for De Volkskrant. How do you get used to a new environment as quickly as possible? She resolved to seize every opportunity to eat something new. That isn’t difficult where she lives, she writes, because she is right among the wine shops, delicatessens and restaurants. Envy-inducing!
Lecture on grape varieties
On these culinary expeditions, she discovers not only that she has to take her time with the daily shopping – when she tries to leave quickly with a bottle of wine, she is called back for a lecture on grape varieties and appellations – but she also comes across an old familiar snack: tacos. She knew them from Morocco, her previous posting, where the snack was also touted as ‘typically French’.
Gruyère with sauce, sauce and more sauce
All right, Eline digs in and immediately understands; this is food fit for the gods. ‘The first bite was promising. Crispy on the outside, lovely hot fries, and the homemade cheese sauce had a hint of Gruyère. With the second bite, I tasted only sauce. By the third, I feared my arteries would clog and wished I had ordered the thing to go, so that at least I would keep moving while eating. By then, the tacos had turned into a kind of pale-yellow mixture in which tortilla, fries, vegetables and cheese sauce had become one. Even the harissa had merged into the yellow amid all the caloric violence.’
Billion
So what exactly are these tacos? It’s a soft tortilla, filled with meat such as chicken nuggets or kebab, cheese sauce, another sauce, even more meat and fries. That folded tortilla goes between a table grill until everything has melted and mixed together nicely, and then you can dig in. Probably a billion calories, and indeed all the health risks that may come with cholesterol, but: the taste!
On the hunt!
Sadly, this French trend has not been spotted here yet. That makes it a great destination for an upcoming holiday, on y va!
