Tested: kimchi chips (available at Jumbo)
Kesbeke is everywhere this year. We encountered the cheerful Amsterdam family of picklers in our liver sausage (with pickle), in our ice cream (pickle ice cream with vodka) and even on our slippers. The latest collaboration? This one is with Boerderij Chips. They used Kesbeke’s kimchi as inspiration and a flavouring for this innovation. Kimchi chips—we obviously had to taste them! Are they tasty? Here’s our verdict.
Kimchi: spicy Korean sauerkraut
For anyone not yet familiar with kimchi, it is Korea’s spicy answer to sauerkraut. Made with fermented, spicy Chinese cabbage, it is also the Korean cuisine’s biggest export product. Kimchi smells strong, but is soft and crunchy and quite fresh-tasting. Outside Korea, kimchi has many fans, but as is often the case with bold flavours: not everyone appreciates them. My own father, for example, goes completely crazy when there’s a jar of kimchi in the fridge—and not out of enthusiasm. I do really like it myself, but I can’t deny that it smells intense.
Smart chip makers
The chips seasoned with kimchi come from Henk Scheele & René de Zeeuw, the smart chip makers behind the brands Hoeksche Chips and Boerderij Chips. They previously surprised us with something ingenious for the final stage of eating chips. Namely, a revolutionary corner at the bottom that you can tear off the bag in one quick movement, allowing you to tip those last crumbs into your mouth without any fuss. Will you want that with the new kimchi chips too?
Kimchi chips test
Time for a test! The first thing you notice is the cheerful pink bag, with the Kesbeke logo in the top-right corner and bright orange cabbage leaves underneath—the colour of kimchi. When we open the bag, there’s only a mild smell. My father can breathe easy. The chips themselves are deliciously crunchy, with a brown edge from the skin and a perfect thickness; exactly how we like to eat our chips. And the flavour? Above all, it’s fresh. The words ‘light paprika’ even came up. And as with other seasoned chips, the same applies here: the more orange the chip, the stronger the kimchi flavour. But it really is mild; it’s mainly fresh and crunchy.
Our verdict: buy that bag!
