Tested: Pornstar Martini in a Jar at Albert Heijn
I’m a sucker for Pornstar Martinis. If I could only drink one beverage for the rest of my life, it would be ‘the Pornstar.’ Guess I’d have a hangover every day. Now I saw something at Albert Heijn that I rarely get so excited about: Pornstar Martini in a jar. IN A JAR. Is it any good?
Whoever came up with this is either a walking genius, or has just spectacularly ruined the world’s most delicious drink. I’m an incredibly strict judge when it comes to Pornstars, so I’m curious.
Genius or spectacularly ruined?
Who might the genius or bungler be? The Stillery Amsterdam. It’s no ordinary distillery: their spelt grain vodka was once named one of the best vodkas in the world. Besides vodka, they also make jenever, gin, whisky and an alcohol-free gin (virgin). And now Pornstar Martini in a jar too.
First, let’s take a look at the jar itself. It’s small. I think half the size of a jar of peanut butter. One such glass jar contains 120 millilitres of drink; exactly enough for one Pornstar serving. The instructions are printed on the side of the glass. You simply have to add one ice cube, shake for at least 30 seconds and then pour the drink into a glass. I am so curious to see how this drink will slide into my glass. Will you get such a beautiful layer of foam as with the ‘real’ Pornstar Martini? Is it just as beautifully bright orange, or will the ice cube make it incredibly watery? So many questions. I’m totally fascinated.
Shake it
Luckily, I still have ice cubes in the freezer. I pick out a nice one and put it in the Pornstar jar. To be safe, I shake it for almost a minute. I absolutely want that layer of foam, because I consider it one of the most important qualities of a good Pornstar Martini. After that minute, I slowly pour the Pornstar Martini into a cocktail glass. And it turns out…
Look at that layer of foam! This already looks so good, don’t you think? And without a long list of ingredients or a huge cocktail shaker. A mini jar that fits right in your hand is all you need. I have a strong suspicion that we’ll be able to stamp the jar ‘genius’ shortly.
The final verdict
And sure enough: that’s exactly right. This is simply a good Pornstar Martini. I can taste the vanilla and passion fruit clearly. Thankfully, because the jar says it contains real passion fruit. The vodka is present, but not so strong that it makes your whole face pucker. I also find it has a smooth flavour. Not watery at all, which I was initially afraid of. This is simply a melted Solero ice lolly, and that’s exactly how I like my Pornstars. A Pornstar Martini from scratch naturally tastes just a little more intense and the flavour also lingers longer, but all in all I think this is really good. Genius, even!
Price of the Pornstar Martini jar
A jar like this costs just € 2.99. So it’s cheaper than the ready-made Pornstar from HEMA! And just think: these days you already pay at least € 12.50 for a Pornstar Martini in a bar or restaurant… Definitely recommended for your next cocktail party at home. Apparently, The Stillery Amsterdam also sells Espresso Martini and Amaretto Sour in a jar; a tip for fans.
