The Amsterdam police’s favorite snack spots

A long time ago, I was part of the Amsterdam police force. My fondest memories all involve the food I ate during that period. So when I need a tip, I know who to call. Believe me, the popo knows to find good streetfood. These are the Amsterdam police’s favorite — and fastest — snacks.

Döner
Leeman Döner is one of the best döner spots in Amsterdam. The police favorite is the Turkish pizza with mixed meat. Half chicken, half veal, rolled up in a Turkish pizza. Addictively delicious. Another good döner spot is Erol Döner on Spaarndammerstraat. Try the kapsalons there too!
Broodje Zeedijk
Slagerij Vet on the Zeedijk in the heart of Amsterdam makes sandwiches that are, oh man, so delicious. The ‘broodje Zeedijk’ is truly unbeatable. A crispy white roll, sometimes still warm from the oven, topped with lettuce, crispy bacon, smoked chicken breast and the notorious Zeedijk sauce. It’s ordered so often that it’s also known as the ‘police sandwich’.

Large box of rice
Also on the Zeedijk, but for when you’re hungrier or when your shift is over and you want to take something home: a large box filled with white rice and grilled pork with soy sauce. Wing Kee isn’t cheap, but it’s tastier than elsewhere — and above all, quick and easy.
Pizza
Another thing that always goes down easily: pizza. Preferably the kind from Salvatore on the Hobbemakade. No favorite here — everything is top-notch.
Indonesian snacks
Pastries, spring rolls and, not to be forgotten: the Indonesian croquette. Toko Kokkita in Amsterdam-Zuid is the place to be. Even when you’re really hungry.
Fries
A household name for years, not only among police officers but among all Amsterdammers: the Flemish fries from Vlaams Friteshuis Vleminckx. The only downside: there are always long queues on Voetboogstraat. But then again, we know why. ALWAYS delicious.
Italian sandwich
At the delicatessen shop Salumeria Italiana on the Kinkerstraat, they sell the most delicious hams and cheeses, as well as filled sandwiches. Also excellent: Caldi e Freddi on the Spuistraat. Delicious and affordable!
Turkish pizza
You can find the best and cheapest Turkish pizza (also) on the Kinkerstraat, at Marmara. Great if you work during the day on Saturday: in Amsterdam-Noord, you’ll find the tastiest Turkish pizza at Bizim Ufuk in the Waterlandplein shopping center.
