Has the world officially gone mad now? It kind of feels that way. Because if you had told me three years ago that we would soon be getting a vegan cheese market in the Netherlands, I would have looked at you very strangely. Not that I’m anti-vegan, mind you — absolutely not. But vegan cheese… As a cheese lover, that’s really where I draw the line.

But who knows, I might be surprised at the Vegan Cheese Market in Utrecht, which will take place on October 1. At least the selection won’t be the problem.

More than 100 types of plant-based cheese

‘The time is ripe for an event like this. There is so much to offer people who want to reconsider their cheese consumption out of respect for animal rights and want to experiment with new flavors,’ says Angélique Voskamp, co-organizer and member of the Dutch Association for Veganism.

The cheese market has only just been announced, but it is already attracting a lot of attention. According to the organizers, many restaurant owners and cheesemakers also plan to stop by, because they would like to taste what is possible with vegan cheese. And honestly, that would also be my reason for going: because I’m very curious to see whether it can actually be tasty. I’ve already tried a number of alternatives to real cheese, but as far as I’m concerned, they don’t come anywhere near the original. So if you have any tips regarding vegan cheese, let me know.
