The New Lekkerbek Talk #5

In The New Lekkerbek, a professional jury searches for the Netherlands’ next taste sensation. Sort of like Idols, but with food—that can only make for a whole lot of entertainment. What exactly goes through my head during an episode like this? I write it down for you every week.

The final already—such a shame! I’m sure there are still so many more brilliant deep-fried snacks that I haven’t thought of myself. I’m also really hoping something fried will win. The paella or lasagne slice, for example. As long as those dog biscuits don’t win. Okay, here we go!
1. Fashionista of the week is definitely Janny, who appears in a leopard-print outfit. With pearls! What a perfect combination of tacky and chic.
2. The paella slice is suddenly called disco de paella?! Am I only noticing this now, or has Ronald done a rebrand? What a fantastic name!
4. Oh Jesus, the citadel has definitely undergone a rebrand—and how?! La citadelle. Maybe Monique was inspired by Alain’s charming accent, but she hasn’t won me over with this name yet.
5. The poffertjes stick is now called THE SMICKELSTICK! I can’t take it anymore, this is amazing?! Who wouldn’t want a delicious snack stick in their mouth? Wonderful, guys!
6. Ahh, Ivo brought ‘a small group of people’—40 of them—and they all seem to look like Ivo too! A question that occurs to me: Do all these 40 people not have jobs?
7. Are Daan, Ellen and Alain all wearing the same thing?
8. I’m really going to miss André—can’t he come vacuum my living room sometime soon?
10. Roos actually named her product ‘Mama Roos’. Is her head going to be huge on the packaging too? I hope so. A nice detail, though, that the jury also gets those plastic baby spoons.
11. Where would that chef from the ‘food innovation team’ stand in the kitchen? Is it very mean if I say he looks a bit like a nobody rather than a chef who runs a kitchen?
12. Those shirts with Aunt Ivy! This is genuinely the cutest thing I’ve ever seen; I want a shirt like that too. Aunt Ivy’s sucijsjes, and they’re downright sweet. That’s the way, girl!
13. Ahh, and Antoine. ‘What a beautiful baby.’ ‘I think she got that from my wife.’ My heart is melting.
14. Oh my God, that béchamel layer on top of the lasagne too. If it melts in the deep fryer and starts running out of the slice, like cheese from a cheese soufflé. I can already taste it in my mind—this is brilliant!
15. Why does everyone keep saying lasagna? It’s simply lasagnE!
16. ‘I melted the cheese; I hope the cheese wafers make you melt.’ You’ve got me. It’s so fun that everyone came up with these kinds of cozy slogans for their products.
17. Still a shame that Caroline and her ginger spread didn’t make it through. If she can confidently tell us in her smoky voice that the spread is good for your throat, what else might she have in store for us? ‘It can only get better.’ Exactly, Caroline.
18. Could Chef Rob just act normal for a moment? A sour belt on your snack stick? This looks like a freakshake!
19. Is it a disco ball? No, it’s Ivo’s head with a million tiny beads of sweat!
20. The waffles for people and dogs are vegan, gluten-free, sugar-free, dairy-free, sustainable and also very tasty? I believe precisely none of it. Sorry, but I really do think this product is so stupid—just buy cookies for your dog and eat genuinely tasty cookies yourself.
21. Daniel and Albert: ‘As long as we haven’t figured it out yet, we have a chance.’ Can this please go on a wall tile?
22. Huh, how is la citadelle through? And those dog biscuits??!! WTF?! Hello, where are the paella slice and Aunt Ivy’s sucijsjes? I so do not agree with this (even though I haven’t tasted anything). The lasagne slice had better make it through, because this is nonsense.
23. Huh, the dog biscuits get two scores of five lekkerbekjes? They’re not actually going to win, are they? It’s suddenly getting very exciting. Ah, luckily Ellen can still think clearly and gives them only three lekkerbekjes.
24. Antoine: ‘Did I win?’ Yaaaaaaaay! This is so cute! What a sweetheart. His girlfriend too, with that baby in the audience! She can’t believe it! Well, I can—could someone send a box of lasagne slices to the FavorFlav editorial office? Thanks!
25. Antoine’s girlfriend: ‘Thank the jury.’ Very good, girl—even if you’ve just won €10,000, keep minding your manners. What a wonderful ending to this amazing season.
