The Nieuwe Lekkerbek-talk #1

In De Nieuwe Lekkerbek, a professional jury searches for the Netherlands’ next big taste sensation. It’s kind of like Idols, but with food, which can only make for a whole lot of entertainment. What exactly goes through my head during an episode like this? I’ll write it all down for you every week.

What a wonderful programme! If there’s one thing I love, it’s a good dose of homely silliness, and this programme is positively dripping with it. The adorable contestants, André van Duin with his ultimate cosiness, and Alain Caron’s French accent. Who else can’t wait to listen to his accent all season long? Okay, here we go.
1. How long do you think Janny had been hiding behind that curtain?
2. Sittard + delicious = sitadel? Very cleverly thought up, Monique, but I was actually hoping you’d do something with a frikandel.
3. Ah, luckily Bernadette brought frikandellen! But huh, she’s going to serve chocolate with them? “When you hear it, you think yuck. Ew. Disgusting.” You read my mind, Bernadette.
4. She gets 10 points for her song, though.
5. Did Bernadette really just bring ready-made frikadellen that she then heats up in an ice-cold pan? What nerve. I like Bernadette.
6. “Don’t tell an Italian, okay, but actually lasagne isn’t Italian, it’s Greek!” Thanks, Janny, for this fun bit of background information. By the way, that lasagne disc sounds absolutely delicious to me, kind of like arancini but much bigger.
7. Back to the chocandel: “They’re products that don’t belong together.” No kidding, Robert. “Very diplomatic, but I’m just spitting that thing out,” Alain is thinking. I completely agree with him, what a legend. My favourite jury member already.
8. Robert keeps throwing around technical jargon while judging the lasagne disc. “For me, it could use a little more flavour.” “You mean salt?” Thank you, Ellen—just act normal, Robert.
9. The sweet-and-savoury combo is trendy, and now we’re getting a croquette with… sugar? WTF? I think someone has simply taken another ready-made snack from the freezer section, which André lavishly tops with sugar. Rens Kroes turns around on her Rocycle bike.
10. Self acclaimed mashed-potato maniac Michel wants to “grab and mash immediately” every potato he sees. What dedication.
11. This stampi sandwich looks promising. Carbs on carbs, I love it.
12. “Wood ants taste a little sour.” Janny’s knowledge once again proves all-encompassing. Not only has she obviously eaten ants before, she also knows specific species! Is the wood ant then a bit like the Wagyu cow?
13. I’m so glad we have lemons in the Netherlands, so we don’t have to eat ants.
14. Hmmm, there’s also ginger, pink pepper, lemongrass, sesame seeds and red onion in the spice mixture. Maybe it would actually be delicious over my rice.
15. “Banish sugar, embrace the fig.” I’m pretty sure there’s sugar in a fig too, Sophie.
16. Marc, if you’re reading this, could you send a bottle of that addictive ketjap sedeng to the FavorFlav editorial office? Thanks!
17. Are twins Savannah & Yaela really lugging around a huge whipped-cream machine to make their Zwolsche bol? You can just buy a cream charger or a piping bag, can’t you? Something’s not quite right here.
18. Really craving one of those buns now.
19. What does it say about Alain that snails and baby food have been his favourites so far? You’re still my favourite jury member, Alain.
