The snacks you want back at the snack bar
Recently, I wrote about deep-fried snacks that are increasingly disappearing from snack bars — and how much of a shame I think that is. You all unanimously agreed. In fact, it turns out there are even more snacks you’re starting to miss and want back!
That’s why I’m making a part two of the list, because you came up with even more snacks… As a snack lover, I hadn’t even heard of some of them! But snack bars, if you’re reading this: perhaps consider adding these to the menu again?
The snacks you want back at the snack bar
1. Kidney ragout roll
The first one (of many more to come) I had never heard of; apparently it’s just as old as a croquette. One of the very first deep-fried snacks, in fact, with a crispy exterior and a lovely firm ragout made with veal kidneys. The late star chef Jonnie Boer of De Librije, who died this year, is said to have once described the kidney ragout roll from the now-defunct Snackcorner Norp in Zwolle as ‘an artisanal taste sensation’. Such a shame that it’s almost impossible to find anymore! Fortunately, you can still get one at De Automatiek on Steenweg in Roermond, as one reader pointed out.
2. Ham and cheese soufflé
It seems pretty obvious what this is, and indeed: I haven’t seen one at a snack bar in a very long time. A shame, because it really is delicious.
3. Lihanboutje
Every now and then you’ll still come across this snack at a random snack bar, and if you see one: order it immediately. It’s a deliciously spicy snack shaped like a chicken drumstick, with delicious chicken inside. Better than a kipcorn, if you ask me.
4. Kroepia
We’ve written about this snack from 010 before, which is unfortunately disappearing more and more. The snack comes from Rotterdam and is essentially a portion of noodles, but wrapped in a crispy jacket of spring roll wrappers. Gers!
5. Bamischijf
Yes, unfortunately this one is also slowly fading into the background… Such a shame, because this is a top-tier snack. I still occasionally find one at the older snack bars in Amsterdam, and of course I order it immediately; it’s always a little moment of joy.
6. Smulrol
This was made by Mora, but it too is threatened with extinction. It’s a sausage-shaped snack, folded like a crêpe, with a filling of meat and diced vegetables (especially carrot). A kind of spring roll, basically. This is what Wikipedia has to say about it, because I’ve never actually had the chance to see one in the wild.
7. Kipknots
‘Bring back the kipknots! Yes, you really miss this cult snack. Another Mora snack we want back! This snack consists of a piece of chicken covered in a crispy breadcrumb coating, shaped like a… club.
