Hello, does anyone still care about the bamischijf?
According to the PVV, the bamischijf is in danger. Martin Bos, a PVV representative in Zeeland, wrote that on Twitter in response to the golden coach being moved to a museum. Shock! Because why is the bamischijf’s very existence under threat? What is going to happen? And why had nobody heard anything about it?
The FavorFlav editorial team keeps a pretty close eye on the news, especially when it comes to food, but we completely missed the fact that something might be going on with the bamischijf . Martin Bos puts the bamischijf in the same category as negerzoen and zigeunersaus, seemingly claiming that the name ‘bamischijf’ for that almost-forgotten snack also has a racist or discriminatory undertone. If that is the case, we are hearing it from this provincial representative for the first time. We are not alone in that, by the way, because Twitter is flooded with reactions along the lines of: what are you even talking about?!
Canned bami goreng
Culinary columnist Sylvia Witteman comes to the bamischijf’s defense. She also reminds us of the canned bami goreng from the equally almost-forgotten brand ‘Kung Fu’, later Suzi-Wan, which actually has little to do with the authentic dish served as part of a rijsttafel, just like the bamischijf. Sylvia wants the bamischijf to stay; in her column she calls the snack ‘the crispy embodiment of Dutch virtues such as thrift, diligence, wanderlust and inventiveness.’
Don’t underestimate the bamischijf
Our own Snackspert was also unaware of the bamischijf’s apparently endangered status. ‘What a fuss over a bamischijf!’ he writes. A fuss about nothing, according to the expert on everything that can be deep-fried. How does he see the bamischijf’s position in the Dutch snack landscape? ‘Like the child who gets picked last in gym class,’ he says, ‘but that’s a little unfair.’ In short: the bamischijf may be overlooked, but it isn’t going anywhere for now – perhaps a reassuring thought for people who worry about blanke vla and moorkoppen.
