These are the 100 most popular cookies in the world
A freshly baked, warm spekkoekje, chocolate cookie with beurre noisette or limoncello madeleine straight from the oven: irresistibly delicious. All over the world, you’ll find cookies in all kinds of shapes, sizes and flavors. From Morocco to Thailand and from Sweden to Mexico: these are the world’s 100 most popular cookies.
The Italians love dipping an amaretti di Saronno into their cappuccino. In Australia, yo-yo cookies (made with shortbread dough and buttercream) are a favorite. In fact, there isn’t a country in the world without its own typical cookies.
The Netherlands appears 8 times on the list
Take our own little country, for example. Eight of our specialties made it onto the list of the 100 most popular cookies. Here we go: at number 92 is taaitaai, at number 77 krakeling, at number 74 bitterkoekjes, followed by pepernoten at number 73. Higher up the list are gevulde koek (at number 53) and kruidnoten (which are definitely different from pepernoten) at number 50. Near the top of the list, stroopwafel comes in at number 13, while speculaasje is the highest-ranked Dutch cookie at number 11.
What’s striking is that the list also includes a few cookies that look very familiar to us. Sweden, for example, has a punschrule, essentially a mergpijpje, but bright green. In Denmark, they also eat pebernødder during December, while the Italians call a coconut macaroon biscotti al coco.
