These are the 2 best cookbooks of 2021 (according to both the jury and the public)
We recently wrote about the six nominees for the Cookbook of the Year election, organized by our colleagues at the culinary platform Food&Friends. Today, the winners have been announced.
A five-member professional jury for the independent Cookbook of the Year election nominated 6 titles from 61 entries submitted by 25 publishers. In addition to the jury prize, there is also a Public Prize. Remarkably, both the professional jury and the public chose a family cookbook as the best cookbook of 2021.
Professional jury winner
Of the 6 nominated titles, the jury unanimously chose Bistro Manon by Manon Proper as the winner. “Manon encourages healthy eating and shows that you can put something surprising on the table with simple and quick recipes,” the jury members said. “This fantastic family cookbook stands out among the other cookbooks. Manon quickly realized that, as a home cook, you shouldn’t give in to the children’s tastes, but adapt your own favorites. The recipes are spot-on, there are many examples of cooking with less meat and fish, but it is certainly not a vegetarian book. If you can teach your children to eat eggplant, you can teach them to eat anything.”
Public favorite
Uit de keuken van Fatima – elke dag anders received the most votes, thereby winning the 2021 Public Prize. The author, Fatima El Irari, turned blogging into her career and inspires people with simple, clear recipes on her website uitdekeukenvanfatima.nl. The book contains a mix of Moroccan classics and modern favorites. With her tips and tricks, you can easily vary recipes or make a dish kid-friendly or vegetarian.
An award for the visuals too
The organizers of the cookbook election believe that, when cookbooks are created, the photographer and designer make an essential contribution. Their names are often only mentioned in the colophon. But they deserve their own special award. Sven ter Heide, photographer of Big green egg – Modus Operandi, and the Danish Sigrid Gry Laursen, designer of Nordic family kitchen, received these well-deserved awards.
The jury said about Sven: “Step by step, the preparation of the recipes is shown. Where the recipes are sometimes somewhat complicated, the photography immediately clarifies them.” The design was described as follows: “Everyone is invited to start cooking the ‘little paintings’ from this book. The power of simplicity is highlighted beautifully here, and this designer knows exactly how to translate it. It is different from the usual.”
