These are the tastiest Bolognese chips from the supermarket (and the worst!)
What is typically Dutch, crunchy and spicy, and has been impossible to leave off the shopping list since the 1980s? You got it in one: Bolognese chips. We tasted the own-brand chips from five supermarkets to let you know which chips you don’t want to miss.
The FavorFlav editorial team had been looking forward to this enormously. Because as it turns out—and we didn’t know this about one another—Bolognese chips are a true editorial favorite. Everyone empties a bag in no time. The smelly fingers and terrible breath left behind by this chip flavor don’t stop anyone from diving in completely.
Original chips
We aren’t testing Croky’s Bolognese original chips; we’re focusing on the different own brands. Remarkable: they all look the same. The same color, the same size chips. If you didn’t know better, you’d think we’d taken five bowls from the same bag (and quickly put the other bags in the trunk, nice for home). No, no, this is a serious tasting, and once we’ve tasted the first chips, the differences become clear.
Boring?
We do expect Bolognese chips to have a spicy flavor, and Jumbo’s chips are a little disappointing in that regard. The flavor is flat and the tasters call it ‘boring’. Dirk also doesn’t dare to go all out with its Bolognese chips; they’re a little bland too. But perhaps that also depends on your luck: the seasoning isn’t distributed very evenly, so the next bite could have flames shooting out of your nostrils again. Aldi goes too far in the opposite direction: the chips taste strongly of paprika and bouillon, and that’s not the point.

- Albert Heijn, 250 gram, 1,39 euro. Bolognese-smaak goed aanwezig. Opvallend grote chips. Goed gekruid. Authentieke Bolognese-smaak. Winnaar!

- Dekamarkt en Dirk, 225 gram, 1,38 euro. De kruiden lijken niet eerlijk verdeeld: de ene tester heeft een mond met pittige Bolognese-kruiden en de andere lijkt wel naturelchips te eten.

- Lidl, 250 gram, 1,39 euro. Stuk dikker en daardoor krokanter, misschien wel té hard. Smaakt ook meer naar aardappel. Eet je hier wel een hele zak van leeg?

- Jumbo, 250 gram, 1,39 euro. Mild gekruid. Prima chipje, maar het schreeuwt geen Bolognese. Te saai.

- Aldi, 250 gram, 1,39 euro. Heel pittig, veel bouillon- en paprikasmaak. Too much!
Chunky chips
While tasting, we noticed that Lidl’s chips are sliced considerably thicker than the other four chips. That was also the case when testing the ridged chips; apparently, Lidl likes a sturdier chip that you really have to bite into. Deliciously crunchy, certainly, but we wonder whether you can eat the entire bag of these. Our favorite Bolognese chips come from Albert Heijn. They’re deliciously spicy, but not too spicy. The bowl empties in stacks at a time. That’s how Bolognese chips should taste!
