These Culinary Irritating Words We Never Want to See Again, Part 3

Chocoladetaart

Culinary irritating words and terms: there are so many of them that after a previous article about irritation-inducing ‘classics’ such as ‘your snack moment’, ‘a little bit of experience’ and ‘hospitality tigers’, there are still enough left to put to the irritation test.

When we recently did another round of ‘Which ‘foodie’ term really annoys the hell out of you?’, the blood of all those surveyed started flowing faster. Out of crankiness. The word ‘foodie’ itself already made Vincent roll his eyes, and then a whole string of others followed. And after looking a little further, it turned out that many more commonly used terms that come up when people talk about food and drink are considered highly irritating. Here are some reactions from Buzzfeed readers:

Crack

The name of this extremely addictive drug is often used to describe something that is incredibly delicious and that you keep wanting more of. “As someone who has just stopped using crack, I can tell you that it’s not as entertaining as you think.”

Superfood

“ The whole idea of superfoods encourages tunnel vision. Everyone becomes fixated on one product and gives it hero status, and then we have to deal with it being in or turning up everywhere for years to come. No food item should cause that kind of fetishism.”

Better than sex

“Erm… if that piece of chocolate cake really is better than sex for you, then I’m worried that your needs aren’t being met sufficiently.”

Rustic

“‘Rustic’ is simply code for ‘stuffed into a ciabatta roll that’s harder than a baseball’. ‘Rustic’ also means: ‘I couldn’t care less about the presentation’.”

Better than takeout

“Of course the hamburger you just spent twenty-five euros and three hours in the kitchen making is better than that Big Mac that was slapped together for four euros.”

Fusion

“Do you mean: we left out all the spices and replaced them with mayo?”

Mouthfeel

“STOP SAYING MOUTHFEEL. It’s just called texture.”

There! That feels better, doesn’t it?! I’ll wrap up now with something that really shouldn’t be said, but that I somehow secretly find very cute: until orange soda and the vegetables!
