These plant-based halal meal boxes are perfect, healthy and easy for Ramadan

Muslim family during holy month of Ramadan

Ramadan begins tomorrow, and for many, this is a month in which togetherness and reflection take centre stage. Every evening, the fast is broken with Iftar, and usually this involves extensive cooking, with an enormous variety of delicacies on the table. But not everyone has time to spend hours in the kitchen preparing that meal, and now there is a solution!

From the kitchen of meal-box start-up Plant B, in collaboration with two Muslim female nutrition experts and foodies, comes a range of halal meal boxes specially created for Ramadan. The idea is not only focused on convenience; they are also completely plant-based meals, which fits well with the lives of an increasing number of Muslims who want to eat more consciously and sustainably, without compromising on the pleasure of eating.

Delicious can also be easy

Plant B, a young company offering frozen meal boxes designed to make healthy, plant-based eating as easy as possible for people, developed a range of frozen meals together with Muslim women Ahlam (known as the Moroccan Dietitian) and Muna (a popular food blogger). They can be put on the table in no time when Iftar begins. No more hassle after a long day of fasting. And as Ahlam explains, the meals are rich in fibre, which makes you feel full and means you are less likely to get hungry. They also contain plenty of vegetables and protein, exactly what the body needs during a period of fasting during the day.

So they are very healthy, also because the meals are frozen immediately after preparation, preserving the important nutrients as effectively as possible. “Extra nice during a period when you are asking a lot of your body; you can use some extra power then,” says Ahlam. According to Joost Esser, co-founder of Plant B, it is remarkable that Muslim consumers are still often overlooked by supermarkets and food brands, even though younger Muslims in particular (or Muslims in general) are increasingly conscious of sustainability and health, while often having to combine this with a busy lifestyle. There is therefore certainly a need for convenience. “Halal goes beyond merely the method of slaughter,” says Joost. “It is increasingly about eating responsibly, with high-quality ingredients.”

Vegan and halal indulgence!

Super varied

And these meals certainly meet those requirements, if we can go by the descriptions alone: for example, the Mean Tajine with whole-wheat couscous, chickpeas, lots of vegetables and Arabic flavourings such as nutmeg, cinnamon and preserved lemon. Or the Chili con Amor, or the Taj Ma Dahl, or the Soba Satay Rainbow Noodles… it all sounds amazing!

You can order the meals via the Plant B webshop. They are delivered frozen to your home, after which you can put them in your own freezer. You keep them there until about ten minutes before you are ready to eat. Easy and healthy!
