French Ministers Furious Over School Meals in Lyon
One schoolchild eats no meat, another only halal, and the next would rather not eat beef: to keep things practical, the mayor of Lyon has approved a plan to serve only vegetarian school meals for the time being. French ministers are not happy about it, finding the veggie meals far too alternative and ‘left-wing’.
‘Let’s stop putting ideology on our children’s plates,’ the agriculture minister writes on Twitter. He fears that the vegetarian meals are not healthy for children. The interior minister sees the veggie meals as a slap in the face to farmers and butchers. They have protested, and now the regional administration must decide on the matter.
Three options
In Lyon, the school meals have been temporarily adjusted because, due to coronavirus measures, fewer people are available to prepare and distribute the 29,000 hot meals. Offering several options takes too much time and money, so the city administration has opted for meat-free meals for the time being. And the fact that the mayor happens to be a member of the political party Europe Ecology, a green party, has nothing to do with it, according to him.
A few months of veggie meals
They do contain eggs and fish, by the way, so the meals are not completely vegetarian. Lyon’s alderman for education says that a meat-free meal is the most practical way to ensure that all children can simply eat the meals. Last year, too, schoolchildren in Lyon ate vegetarian meals temporarily for a few months—and at that time Lyon still had a right-wing mayor. To be contiuned…
