This Champagne Cake Is the Best Cake You’ll Ever Taste (and It’s Available in the Netherlands)
Those who know us a little by now know that we love cake with a touch of alcohol in it. We usually bake them ourselves, such as Aperol cake, Flügel cupcakes from the Airfryer (an oven works too) and gin and tonic cake. But this addictive champagne cake isn’t one we make ourselves—we get it from this top address: Huize van Wely.
Huize van Wely has now been around for more than 100 years (since 1922, to be precise), and lovers of exceptional treats have known exactly where to find this pastry shop for years. All Huize van Wely products, which has even been appointed a purveyor to the Royal Household, are created in the kitchens in Noordwijk aan Zee, under the direction of Chef Patissier Robin Hoedjes, who won the Dutch Pastry Award in 2015.
There are now five shops in the Netherlands where you can get this heavenly pastry: Noordwijk, Heemstede, two shops in Amsterdam and, since recently, a shop in Haarlem. There are also two shops in Jakarta (Indonesia), and in October 2024 Huize van Wely will open a concept store in Singapore. In a beautiful location: the iconic Raffles Hotel Singapore.
Moët & Chandon champagne cake
There really isn’t anything from this pastry shop that I don’t like, but my absolute favorite has to be the champagne cake, made in collaboration with the famous champagne house Moët & Chandon. You can order it with (or without) a champagne crate. Doesn’t it look festive?
White chocolate with champagne
But the proof of the cake is in the eating. And what a celebration it is! Layers of white chocolate and champagne ganache alternate with airy almond sponge, covered with almond marzipan and a thin layer of dark chocolate. Could it be any more decadent? Yes—with a glass of champagne alongside it.
The perfect gift
Believe me: you’ll really want to sink your teeth into this as soon as possible. And after that, you’ll never have to stress again about what to give that newly married couple, the lovely neighbor who watered your plants while you were on vacation, your pregnant friend or what to bring in for your colleagues at work. The champagne cake costs €30.50 (without the wooden casing, which you can order separately) and can be picked up at one of the shops or ordered online via the Huize van Wely website. Believe me, you won’t find a tastier cake.
