This drink is fit for a princess

Once upon a time there was a girl, and she became a princess. But long before Meghan Markle married Prince Harry and thereby became The Duchess of Sussex (her official title), she had, as befits many a Hollywood star, a lifestyle blog. And years ago, she already mentioned a fondness for another particularly British treat!

Gone
While Gwyneth Paltrow and Reese Witherspoon, for example, do not have to contend with the extremely heavy protocol and piercing etiquette of the British royal family, Meghan does. That cozy blog had to be taken offline immediately when the couple started dating. But by now almost everyone knows that ‘what happens on the internet, stays on the internet’, and so, thanks to an unearthed old post, the knowledge has not been lost that one of Meghan’s favorite drinks is the straight-up British Pimm’s Cup.
Frivolous
Okay, in the recipe she provided, she added a few slices of radish and celery for extra frivolity (it was still healthy Hollywood, after all), but the fact remains that Pimm’s Cup is a classic that, besides Wimbledon, certainly won’t look out of place in your cocktail arsenal.
Say, Pim…
So how exactly does it work? James Pimm was a farmer’s son who owned an oyster bar in Central London in the 19th century. He brewed a liqueur made from gin, quinine, and a secret blend of herbs and sold it to the oyster slurpers to aid digestion. It was served in tankards he called ‘No.1 Cups’. Voilà. Top bloke.
How to make Meghan Markle’s favorite drink, the Pimm’s Cup
- 250 ml Pimm’s No.1
- 750 ml 7up, Sprite, or ginger ale
- 1/2 cucumber, cut into thin strips
- juice of 1/2 lemon
- garnish with orange in winter, strawberry in summer (in thin slices)
Pour everything into a pitcher and let it infuse in the refrigerator for an hour before serving.
Cheerio, old chap!
