This hospital food could easily belong in a Michelin-starred restaurant

A hospital in Belgium serves patients such delicious food that it has even been mentioned in a restaurant guide. The food critic raves about delicious sandwiches and a stew that tastes just as good as it does in an Italian restaurant. The hospital, AZ Zeno in Knokke-Heist, is naturally incredibly proud.

At AZ Zeno, there are no overcooked carrots and mashed potatoes as solid as plaster, but delicious fresh meals prepared with vegetables from the restaurant’s kitchen garden. Culinary critic Willem Asaert was so impressed that he wrote a glowing review of the hospital in the Gault & Millau guide. He gives the sandwiches two chef’s hats, and Willem enjoyed the ossobuco, writing that it tastes just as rich as it does in a good Italian restaurant.

Good for recovery

The hospital is delighted. Good food is important for a good recovery, the hospital’s catering manager writes. ‘Naturally, as a restaurant, it is not our ambition to be a Michelin-starred restaurant,’ he tells the reporter from AD. ‘This mention is recognition of our philosophy.’

Insipid vegetables

If only you could enjoy food like this in Dutch hospitals, but unfortunately, insipid vegetables and tasteless meals are still often on the menu here. A few hospitals are trying to change that: in Amersfoort, patients are regularly offered small snacks, in the hope that they will eat better as a result. And a hospital in Enschede offers protein shakes alongside coffee and tea, all with the aim of helping people recover more quickly.
