This is the sign that you shouldn’t order tiramisu in a restaurant
If tiramisu is on the menu, our colleague and Italy enthusiast Sophie from Italiamo almost always orders it. Call it boring, but she thinks that when made well, the dessert never disappoints, and she used to routinely regret choosing something else, so she doesn’t do that anymore. Unless one specific little detail is mentioned alongside the tiramisu on the menu. Then she skips it.
Tiramisu à la…, tiramisu prepared in a certain way, different tiramisu. If there’s anything before or after the description of tiramisu on the menu, it’s time to hit the brakes. Because as fun as headstrong Mario’s tiramisu might be and as special as the deconstructed version at a great restaurant could be, there’s a pretty good chance it will end in disappointment.
No creative messing around
If I order tiramisu, I want tiramisu. No creative messing around, even if it’s made by the best top chefs—just a generous dish of sweet mascarpone with coffee, soggy ladyfingers and cocoa. Nothing more, nothing less—although secretly I do prefer the version with alcohol to the one without. And anything described with more than the word tiramisu has a high chance of being wrong. Because, according to the chef or restaurant’s interpretation, it means someone in the kitchen has taken the classic and given it a new look. If you really can’t resist, go for it. But prepare for potential disappointment; then it can only exceed your expectations.
On the menu
So I’m grateful to menu makers for being honest about it in this way. There are more Italian things that I boringly order by default, where it remains a game of Russian roulette. Stracciatella gelato, for example. Always in my cup, fifty-fifty good or bad. And it’s incredibly disappointing when you get chocolate pieces the size of grains of sand after passing up thirty other mouthwatering gelato flavors. Shall we come up with a similar rule for that too, for the sign in the display case?
