The well-known donut chain Dunkin’ is bankrupt in the Netherlands

In 2017, the Dunkin’ Donuts chain (then still with Donuts in its name) came to the Netherlands. Big news at the time. Within a few years, there would be 25 stores in the Netherlands, four of them in the capital. Now Dunkin’ is bankrupt in the Netherlands. The stores will remain open for the time being; exactly until when is not known.

Dunkin’, formerly Dunkin’ Donuts, was founded in 1950 and has more than 12,500 locations in 45 countries worldwide, 240 of them in Europe. Two years after the fast-food chain (for the second time, incidentally) arrived in the Netherlands with its buttery-rich donuts and overly sweet toppings, supermarket chain Jumbo started selling Dunkin’ Donuts. The Dutch (and Belgian) Dunkin’ locations came under the ownership of Van der Valk last year. The hospitality group wanted to grow the chain by another sixty outlets, hoping to attract young people to its hotels.

Vegan donuts and Cloud Cake
Not everything at Dunkin’ is made with butterfat, by the way. In 2021, Dunkin’ introduced not only more than 40 varieties of vegan donuts, but also the so-called Cloud Cake: a steamed cake donut instead of a fried one. It was a Dutch concept.
‘Prices are also abnormal for a donut’
The reactions on Instagram are mainly about the prices. Far too expensive, according to many. ‘Overpriced. The average Dutch person just goes to Appie for donuts’, ‘More proof that expensive American chains don’t really work in the Netherlands. I’m surprised Starbucks is still standing’, ‘Absurdly expensive. I went once and thought bye bye. So long, hasta la vista’ and ‘Seems logical with those ridiculous prices…. People might buy 1 donut a year at most’ are some of the reactions.
It is unclear what caused the bankruptcy. The administrator told De Telegraaf that the stores will remain open for the time being.
