Michelin Guide Awards 2024: all the winners and losers at a glance

Michelin plakkaat

The new Michelin stars for 2024 were awarded in Maastricht today. Recently, we made a prediction for the new Michelin stars. Did it come true? Which restaurants received a star, or even a second and third star? Which restaurants had to give up a star? You can read it here.

The new 2024 Michelin Guide includes 1 restaurant with 3 Michelin stars, 19 restaurants with 2 Michelin stars and 102 restaurants with one star.

These restaurants had to give up a star

The Amsterdam restaurants Graphite, The Duchess, Le Restaurant and Vanderveen had to give up their stars. Outside Amsterdam, De Kromme Watergang in Hoofdplaat lost 1 star and now has 1 left. Julemont in Wittem lost 2. AIRrepublic in Cadzand lost its star, as did these restaurants: Olivijn in Haarlem, De Rozario in Helmond (which we really don’t understand—we ate there at the beginning of this year and thought it was AMAZING), Rantrée in Maastricht, FG Food Labs and Yama in Rotterdam, Vigor in Vught and Brienen aan de Maas in Well.

Giving up a star is not always related to disappointing quality, by the way. When a restaurant closes, it also loses its star(s), as happened with Vigor in Vught, Brienen aan de Maas in Well and Rotterdam’s Yama, all of which closed this year. Losing a star—or, in Julemont’s case in Wittem, even two—can also happen because the chef in question leaves. Limburg chef Guido Braeken—he won the ‘Young Chef of the Year’ award from Gault&Millau last year and received two stars in one go in 2022—has left Julemont and will start cooking at fine-dining restaurant Create at Van Oys Maastricht Retreat next year.

When a chef leaves, the star is generally lost as well, unless Michelin’s inspectors have the opportunity to quickly reassess the quality. This allows them to determine whether the replacement has the same philosophy or level. Stars were also surrendered last year when Pure C by Sergio Herman lost chef Syrco Bakker. FG Food Labs lost its star because François Geurds recently changed the concept to Franky’s Grill.

Green Star

Green Michelin Stars were awarded again this year. Eight restaurants received a Green Star and are committed to sustainability. They are:

  1. Neder in Alkmaar
  2. Vannu in Bavel
  3. Mearkas in Eastermar
  4. Flores in Nijmegen
  5. Het Kookatelier on Texel
  6. Fermin in Rotterdam
  7. Heimat in Utrecht
  8. Lutum in Wijk bij Duurstede

Two Michelin stars

The Netherlands currently has eighteen restaurants with two stars. One has been added: Inter Scaldes in Kruiningen received a second star. Remarkable, because Inter Scaldes still had three stars last year, but was taken over by Jeroen Actien and his wife Sanne in September last year. Fun detail: they met while working at De Librije, where Jeroen worked for more than eight years. They now receive two stars in one go.

Three Michelin stars

Speaking of De Librije: Jonnie and Thérèse Boer retain their third star—which they have held since 2004. ‘It’s hard work, but the most wonderful thing there is,’ says Thérèse.

Young Chef Award

The Young Chef Award for exceptional talent with great potential goes to Sofiane Bons of restaurant Joelia in Rotterdam. It was presented by Jonnie & Thérèse Boer. According to Michelin’s inspectors, he manages to give the restaurant ‘its own character’.

Sommelier of the Year

Lendl Mijnhijmer, sommelier and co-owner of restaurant Showw in Amsterdam-Zuid, received Michelin’s award for sommelier of the year. Lendl—once named the world’s best wine taster—left his role as wine director at starred restaurant Bougainville on Dam Square, once named the best restaurant in the world, to launch Showw with Bougainville’s head chef Dorus Floris in December 2023. Two Michelin awards this year, then, because Showw also received a star.

Service Award

An award was also presented for the best service. It went to Sonja Boreas—‘personal and sincere,’ according to Michelin—of restaurant Sabero in Leende, which was also rewarded with its first star today. A double celebration here too!

These are all 122 Michelin restaurants in the Netherlands in 2024
