This is the Spanish Bali you want to visit now
It already feels like an eternity ago (that’s often how it goes with trips), but a week and a half ago I spent a few days in Valencia, a city I’ve visited several times but that continues to surprise me every time. And sorry, I might be upsetting some Spain lovers here, but I genuinely think Valencia is way more fun than Barcelona.
These days, holidays, city trips and even work trips are really all about two things for me: eating and having drinks. That’s what my entire day revolves around. I can genuinely look forward to it. Where will I have lunch? Where will I have dinner? And of course I browse all the menus in advance, because anticipation is part of the fun too.
The hotspot in Valencia
Since I was only there for a few days, I absolutely didn’t want to make a mistake when it came to dining, so I asked for tips on Insta: where should I go? And almost unanimously, one place came up: Voltereta Bali. But with the caveat that I had to book quickly, because it was apparently very popular.

That turned out to be the understatement of the century, because the place was absolutely packed. Luckily, I managed to get a table on Saturday at quarter to five. And is it worth the hype? Meeeine gute: YES. Such an insanely fun place. The entrance alone: you walk in through an oasis of waterfalls, market stalls and birdsong, after which you go downstairs (that space is called Seminyak) or upstairs (Ubud). Luckily, we sat upstairs, because honestly, I thought it looked the nicest too. Funny: it looks as though it’s a terrace, but there’s a glass roof over it. Ideal.
And the food? Mega delicious. Everything from sushi to bao buns, delicious chicken satay and a rosé to finish it all off. Although, honestly, I could easily have ordered the entire menu. Can someone please copy and paste this place into Amsterdam?
