This is the tastiest way to eat a kroket, and almost nobody knows it

Dipping a piping-hot kroket in mustard and then risking life and limb to eat it — delicious! Well, that’s my favorite way to eat a kroket. But apparently, that’s not the tastiest way to eat a kroket at all. No, you’re supposed to spoon out the entire kroket first and then fill it with…

Apple sauce! Yes, really. I would never have thought of this myself, and honestly, I also think it sounds rather messy, but apparently the taste sensation is unparalleled. This is clear from several reactions to our article about strange foods we used to absolutely love.
Hollowing out a kroket
Hollow out your kroket, eat the filling, and then fill it with apple sauce. Some people really go all out for it. What’s the result? The soft texture and sweet, slightly tart flavor create a wonderful contrast with the savory, crunchy exterior. But that’s not the only appeal of this discovery.
The contrast in temperature between the warm exterior and the cold apple sauce creates a surprising sensation in your mouth. This adds to the snack’s overall appeal. Or, as Ilona puts it: ‘A divine warm crunch with cold apple sauce. Delicious!’
Deliciously nostalgic
And then there’s the nostalgic aspect that makes people love eating their kroket this way. Apple sauce is often associated with cozy home life and fond childhood memories. Putting apple sauce in a kroket brings those nostalgic feelings back to the surface, making it even more delicious. Mirthe responded enthusiastically to Henriette’s confession: ‘I totally get the kroket! I used to do that all the time too!’ And Rieneke: ‘I always did that with my kroket as a child.’
Even more combinations
Samantha went one step further: ‘I used to hollow out all kinds of things… kroketjes, bamihap… basically anything with a breadcrumb coating.’ And Karin used the hollowed-out kroket trick to get those disgusting Brussels sprouts down: ‘I filled a hollowed-out kroket with Brussels sprout stamppot. The Brussels sprouts tasted much better that way.’ Niels’s nephew filled his kroket with mayo — personally, this makes me feel genuinely nauseous. Or how about Coretta: ‘Fill the hollowed-out kroket with salad dressing, mmm!’ A slightly less hardcore combination is Kimberley’s: ‘I was also a fan of the hollowed-out kroket with apple sauce. I often added mayonnaise to the apple sauce too, and then scooped out my kroket with a French fry.’ Janneke still puts fries in her hollowed-out kroket, and Wilco even stuffs a frikandel in there!
Have you, like most people in the comments, never tried any of this craziness? Then you know what to do with your next kroket. Hollow it out and fill it with apple sauce! And if nothing is too crazy for you, try one of these other creative fillings. It has absolutely nothing to do with kroketiquette. But apparently, it is the tastiest way to eat your kroket. You just have to know about it.
