This is what Dutch people eat most often for dinner (and no, it’s not AVG!)

What is most often served for dinner in a Dutch household? That’s the question de Volkskrant asked out loud. More than 5,000 people responded, and the answer turned out to be surprising. Because if you thought it was the AVG meal; it’s no longer number one!

The participants let de Volkskrant take a look into their kitchens for a week. This resulted in around 29,000 dishes, which de Volkskrant subsequently categorised. The participants came from all the provinces of the Netherlands; some live abroad.
Just give us pasta
And what do we find? We want pasta, and that’s that! Yep, we Dutch enjoy pasta more than anything else throughout the week. In all shapes and sizes and with all kinds of sauces, it seems. We like classic pasta bolognese best of all. After that, we prefer pasta with mushrooms and lasagne. We predicted these three much earlier in a top 10 of the most popular pastas. We call that a prophetic eye. And simply a huge pasta addiction throughout the entire editorial team.
Still a crowd favourite: the AVG meal
That means the AVG meal has been knocked off its throne! For a long time, the trio of potatoes, meat and vegetables was the defining feature of Dutch cuisine. We still love eating it, if we are to believe de Volkskrant’s research. This culinary piece of Dutch culture ranks second among the most frequently eaten dinners. We prefer broccoli as our vegetable and chicken as our meat. Speaking for myself, though, I would choose peas and slavink. With those super-crunchy baby potatoes on the side, YUM.
Newcomer at the table
A fun newcomer on the list is curry. We get wonderfully creative with it. We go for chicken curry, for example, but also fully vegetarian pumpkin curry. Funny, de Volkskrant reports: in 1990, Allerhande, Albert Heijn’s magazine, still published an extensive article about curry. Back then, the supermarket giant really had to explain to readers what kind of dish it was. Around 35 years later, it has become a regular feature on our dinner tables.
