This sandwich is the winner of the 2024 Dutch Tastiest Sandwich Championship

Winnaar NK Lekkerste Broodje 2024

We’re always up for a good sandwich. In fact, we’ll happily queue for one. Whether it’s an Argentine choripán, an American hotdog, or a Beef Teriyaki Sandwich. The latter sandwich, made with, among other things, beef strips and teriyaki sauce, has today been crowned the Tastiest Sandwich 2024.

This happened at Horecava, during the 39th edition of the Dutch Tastiest Sandwich Championship. Sjoerd Mampaeij from restaurant Midas in Woerden created the sandwich. It was his first time taking part. ‘I’m absolutely thrilled! I saw so many beautiful creations during the competition that I didn’t count on winning,’ said an enthusiastic Sjoerd.

Sixteen participants

Sixteen participants took part in the 2024 Dutch Tastiest Sandwich Championship. The assignment was to make five identical creations on the spot, on stage, within eight minutes, which were then tasted and assessed by the professional jury. The jury judged the sandwiches on appearance, creativity, taste experience, edibility, composition and purchase price.

The winning Beef Teriyaki Sandwich consisted of an Italian Pucce Salentino (a light, round sandwich), with, among other things, beef strips, teriyaki sauce, Japanese omelet, shiitake, furikake, mizuna (Japanese mustard greens), sriracha mayonnaise and black squid ink mayonnaise. The jury was highly enthusiastic about the sandwich: ‘A very original sandwich, with phenomenal flavors and beautifully presented too,’ the jury said. ‘The meat in particular, which was smoked over charcoal, came through very well. The sauces, with sour and briny components, brought everything into perfect balance. With the Japanese omelet as a lovely addition.’

Over-the-top sandwiches

An extravagantly filled sandwich like the Beef Teriyaki Sandwich is completely on trend. Grocery prices hurt everyone, eating out is painfully expensive, and yet there are still long queues outside the trendiest bakeries and for the tastiest sandwiches in town. Culinary journalist Mara Grimm can explain this well: it’s due to the unstoppable rise of affordable luxury. A home of your own or a luxurious beach holiday may now be barely affordable, but a perfectly made pastry or a truffle cheese soufflé certainly is. So head to restaurant Midas in Woerden if you want to try this winning sandwich.
