This Sicilian town will pay you €5,000 to move there and you know what, we’re just going
The endless grey, rainy @#%#^-weather of the past few months has made me consider emigrating to a sunny place several times. Just—whoosh—pack my bags and chase the sun. Done with the rain and cold. Now I saw a message that really (almost) pushed me over the edge. The Italian town of Petralia Soprana will actually pay you €5,000 to move there. Seriously.
Starting a new life in a cute Italian village, with 24/7 sunshine and a fat bank account? My bags are already by the door.
Non-stop Italian food? Sì, per favore
Petralia Soprana is located in Sicily, one of Italy’s most popular regions. You’ll find the village southeast of Palermo (you know, the city where that wanted mafia boss disguised as a pizza baker was arrested). It’s known for its characteristic medieval buildings, cute streets and lively festivals. The views over the rolling Sicilian landscape are truly stunning. And—and we consider this important—you have the very best of Italian cuisine within reach at all times.
For example, Sicily’s culinary gem: cannoli. We’ve been tipped off that restaurants Lu Carme and A FuocoLento are firm crowd favourites. Just look at the entrance to A FuocoLento, with its old yellow stone steps and flowering rose bushes around it… Marco Borsato once sang “Most dreams are illusions,” but not in Petralia Soprana.
Put your hands to work
Did you think you could happily spend that €5,000 on all the food there? I get it, I would too. But that’s not quite the idea. No, you’re supposed to put that money into your new Italian casa. You could use it to partly finance the purchase, for example, or put it towards renovations. Turn it into your very own Italian dream home. And if there isn’t a fairy tale about it yet, you can happily write it yourself now.

There are currently around 50 uninhabited houses in Petralia Soprana. One of those palaces-in-the-making could be yours. Besides gaining a few extra kilos from all that delicious Italian food, enjoying incredible views and having romantic moments in adorable alleyways, you’ll also get around 3,000 fellow villagers thrown in. Lovely! I can’t see any reason not to leave for Palermo this very minute.
