This supermarket has (once again!) been named the healthiest supermarket in the Netherlands

Ekoplaza-winkel

Yesterday, we wrote about the most misleading supermarket products, but today we have better supermarket news. Most supermarkets are packed with ultra-processed food, but thankfully, it is also possible to shop healthily. For that, you need to go to Ekoplaza. For the third year in a row, Ekoplaza has been named the healthiest supermarket in the Netherlands.

This is evident from the new Superlijst Gezondheid by research organisation Questionmark. The 2024 Superlijst Gezondheid assesses supermarkets in four areas: policy objectives, product range, promotions and store layout. Ekoplaza stands out with a product range in which 50% of the products within the product groups studied fall within the Wheel of Five guidelines. Ekoplaza is also leading the way in reducing salt and sugar.

And what I personally consider a huge plus: the range is 100% organic and as minimally processed as possible (not genetically modified). So here you can buy, among other things, raisins and strawberries without pesticides. Two products known to contain an absurdly high amount of pesticide residues.

No advertising for spirits

In addition to offering healthy products, Ekoplaza takes measures to limit unhealthy temptations. Ekoplaza has the highest share of healthy promotions. It also has the fewest promotions for beer and wine of all the supermarkets studied, and does not advertise spirits.

Least healthy supermarkets

The supermarkets included in the study* are Albert Heijn, Aldi, Dirk, Jumbo, Lidl and Plus. This selection was made because they represent more than 80% of the Dutch market. Ekoplaza was added because of its explicit sustainability claim. Ekoplaza therefore ranks number one as the healthiest supermarket in the Netherlands. It is followed at some distance by Lidl and Dirk. Jumbo, Aldi, Albert Heijn and Plus lag behind.

Ekoplaza has ninety stores and delivers throughout the Netherlands via its webshop.
