Tough Ukrainian woman knocks drone out of the sky with a jar of tomatoes
She was standing on her balcony smoking a cigarette when she saw a drone flying down the street. She hesitated for a moment, grabbed a jar of preserves and threw it at the drone. Bullseye! The Ukrainian newspaper Liga.Life tracked down the good thrower, and she tells them about her experience.
A few days ago, the incredible story suddenly appeared on Twitter: a housewife from Kyiv brought down a drone by throwing a jar of pickled cucumbers at it. But is the story true? Or is it an urban myth? Who is this woman? And why is she running after Russian military equipment with a jar of cucumbers at the ready?
The Ukrainian online newspaper Liga.Life spoke to the brave woman, and what do you know? ‘To begin with: it was a jar of pickled tomatoes and plums. Where those cucumbers came from, I have no idea.’
Bird? Plane?
The woman who knocked a Russian drone out of the sky is called Olena. She does not want her surname or photo in the newspaper because she is afraid. She says that early in the morning, before the sun had risen, she was sitting on her balcony smoking a cigarette. ‘I saw something slowly drifting through the air. At first I thought it was a crow, looking a little battered. But then I also heard a buzzing sound.’
She had never seen a drone up close before, but she soon realised: this is not a bird, it is something completely different. And now what? She wanted to throw something at the flying device, but if she went inside to get something, it might have flown away already. Under her chair were jars of preserved vegetables and fruit, within easy reach.
‘Such a waste of tomatoes’
She grabbed a jar of pickled tomatoes and plums – one of her successful recipes – and threw it at the drone as hard as she could. ‘I was scared, I think. What if that thing started shooting at me! Such a waste of tomatoes.’ She and her husband then ran downstairs to smash the drone, which was lying on the ground. They distributed the fragments among several rubbish bins. ‘I know nothing about electronics,’ she explains. ‘Perhaps the device would still transmit data or track me in some way.’ She carefully swept up the shards of glass from the jar so that dogs walking down the street would not injure their paws.
No photos
No, she did not take a photo of the drone and her jar of tomatoes. ‘It was not the right moment to take photos,’ she says. Later, she spoke to her ex-husband, who lives one street away. He had also seen drones flying. They could belong to people who wanted to loot apartments and shops. ‘We also saw boys at the entrance to the apartment building who do not belong here. When we asked them what they were doing here, they quickly ran away.’
