Unbelievable: McDonald’s reusable items are being stolen en masse

Wherever people gather, things get stolen. The hospitality industry is no exception. We (and you) even admit it ourselves, as shown by this list of the most popular (and sometimes downright bizarre!) hospitality items that get stolenShame! Now it turns out this is also happening at French McDonald’s, specifically with the reusable tableware.

The reason: people see the reusable, dishwasher-safe containers as collector’s items. ‘Turns out there’s a reusable happy meal and… i’m obsessed’, Juan said on Twitter. And he is receiving enormous support. Personally, I can’t imagine wanting McDonald’s tableware at home, but my colleague Sharon completely gets it: ‘For true McDo fans, this is of course a fun gimmick.’

Reusable items to reduce waste

In any case, McDonald’s has been working on becoming more sustainable for a long time, and they are doing a good job. Since July 2021, for example, you have no longer seen plastic plates, cutlery or straws in the restaurants, and now reusable tableware has been added. The latter was made mandatory by the French government for all fast-food chains with seating for 20 or more people. By offering reusable tableware, the government hopes to drastically reduce the amount of waste in the hospitality sector.

Burger King too

A great initiative—except that McDonald’s fans are now taking serious advantage of it. The reusable containers are being stolen right in front of everyone’s eyes. And not only at McDonald’s: at Burger King restaurants too, the reusable pink logo cups are being shamelessly slipped into bags.

Stealing? Report it to the police

McDonald’s has already admitted that all the theft is causing them losses. How much they are losing (or want to disclose), they cannot say. According to the fast-food chain, it is still too early for that, because the reusable tableware scheme only began on January 1. One French McDonald’s, at any rate, has had absolutely enough of all the kleptomaniacs in its restaurant. They have installed special chips in the tableware and put up a warning on the door: anyone who steals can come and explain themselves to the police.
