Unbelievable. You don’t send a Tikkie for this, do you?!

After Dineke spends an evening at her colleague’s house, she is surprised to receive a message with a strange request. ‘I’m debating whether to message Anne to ask if she was joking with this payment request, but honestly, I can hardly imagine that she was.’

Of course, sending a Tikkie is incredibly convenient. But in some situations, sending a Tikkie is socially awkward. For example, when people send a Tikkie for €0.25 for the mayonnaise on their fries. But the Tikkie Dineke received really takes the cake. Although it’s not about the amount.
Anne’s Tikkie
‘It’s late on Sunday evening and I hear my phone ping. As I pick it up from the table, I assume it’s my daughter, who has arrived safely back at her student room, but to my surprise, it’s a payment request. I open the app and read the message: Would you please pay me €18 for “pizza”. I immediately know who sent it: my new colleague Anne.
Anne has been working in the same office as me for a few months, and it quickly became clear that we clicked. We both have two grown-up children who have left home, and we had both recently divorced after realizing that we no longer had all that much to talk about with our partners. I could laugh with her endlessly, and soon I asked whether she would like to come over for dinner one weekend.
Just as much of a foodie as me
In private, spending time with Anne was great fun too. I had cooked an elaborate meal and set the table nicely. Something I always enjoy doing, but don’t get around to much these days because I often eat alone. So I had gone to the market early to buy fresh fish, a nice cheese and olives for drinks. And at the liquor store I bought a lovely bottle of white wine. I don’t drink much, but when I do want a glass of wine, I prefer a good one. Anne enjoyed the meal and said she was just as much of a foodie as I was.
The next time we met, she ate at my place again. We were actually supposed to eat at hers that time, but she had just been ill for a week, so I said I didn’t mind cooking again. She only had to show up and eat, and next time we would have dinner at her house.
That was last night, but it turned out differently from what I expected. Anne welcomed me warmly, to be fair, but said she hadn’t had time to do any shopping, so she could only offer me a glass of cheap Prosecco or water. A bowl of paprika-flavored crisps was put out, and that was it. Just as we were about to sit down at the table, she suddenly said that she didn’t have anything else in the house either and asked whether I fancied pizza. Embarrassed, I said that was fine too, although I did find it rather strange. She had known for some time that I was coming over for dinner, hadn’t she? Surely you take that into account?
Local pizzeria
Anyway, I was handed a flyer from a local pizzeria and could choose one myself. About half an hour after she placed the order, the delivery driver rang the doorbell and stood there with our meal. Anne then put the boxes on the coffee table by the sofa and started eating. She even joked that at least it saved on washing up. I laughed along awkwardly, but I thought it was so strange. Especially because I had made an effort when she was my guest.
And now it’s Sunday evening and she’s sending me a Tikkie for a pizza. I’m practically gnashing my teeth and don’t know whether to laugh or get angry. This makes absolutely no sense, does it? You don’t make me pay for a tasteless, cold pizza when I’ve already cooked an elaborate meal for you twice, do you? You just don’t do that. I can understand that, despite having made plans, you didn’t have time to go grocery shopping. But making your guest pay for a tasteless bite to eat? I simply can’t get my head around it.
This payment request..
I’m debating whether to message Anne to ask if she was joking with this payment request, but honestly, I can hardly imagine that she was. Asking her at the office tomorrow why she sent me a Tikkie feels incredibly awkward, but paying her €18 just to get it over with really goes too far for me.’
