Utrecht’s top terraces

Temperatures are rising, and that means only one thing: swap that office chair for a sunny spot on a terrace as quickly as possible. These are the places in the Domstad where we love sitting most.

Café Orloff & Orloff aan de kade

Over the years, Orloff has become a true household name. For 35 years, Orloff op ’t Wed has been a familiar spot for people from Utrecht. In the afternoon, you go there for a cup of coffee and in the evening, the drinks flow freely. Het Wed is a lively street in the city centre, with guaranteed people-watching entertainment. Orloff aan de kade is the younger sibling of Orloff op ’t Wed. At this hotspot, you sit on the Oosterkade, right by the water.

Key West Beachhouse

A beach bar in Utrecht? You read that right. Key West Beachhouse is located on the Haarrijnse Plas. With your feet in the sand, you can enjoy a summery cocktail. Our tip: go there at the end of a summer afternoon for the ultimate sunset.

ROOST aan de Singel

ROOST has one of the largest and sunniest terraces in the city. It is located in Park Paardenveld, overlooking the new canal. As well as enjoying the sun, at ROOST you can eat dishes from the braai, the South African version of the barbecue. Be sure to try the charcoal-smoked spareribs or the smoky salmon.

WT Urban Kitchen

WT Urban Kitchen, known locally as ‘the water tower’, is a restaurant in Rotsoord. The restaurant is housed in an old water tower, and you eat on the ninth or tenth floor. From the tenth floor, you have a fantastic 360-degree view of all of Utrecht, and the food is great too. Tip: book well in advance or call on the day itself and hope someone has cancelled at the last minute.

Café De Zaak

On a budget? De Zaak is the place to be. The café follows the rule: bring your own food. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal. The biggest plus: the terrace gets plenty of sun, so a tan is guaranteed. What we always do: get a sandwich from Ben and eat it at De Zaak. Best. Lunch. Ever.

De Zwarte Vosch

A little bit of Spain, but in Utrecht. At De Zwarte Vosch, you drink fresh sangria and eat freshly prepared pintxos. All while basking in the sun, right on the Oudegracht.

SOIA – Strand Oog In Al

City beach Soia is a special place in Utrecht, with a beautiful view over the canal. During the summer months, Soia even has an outdoor cinema. You eat barbecue food here, and it’s a great place for drinks. In the evenings, you might even find a DJ.
