Waiting for the food photo to be taken: this man had had enough

vrouw telefoon restaurant

I knooow it’s pretty annoying, and I’m still not too bad when it comes to how often I do it: photographing food when it arrives at the table (even if I cooked it myself). Especially in restaurants, it can lead to irritating moments. The food arrives at the table, and you have to wait until the photographer in question finally gets the perfect shot. After which you can start on your now-lukewarm food…

This man simply couldn’t take it anymore. He found it so damn annoying that he always had to wait to take a bite because his wife first photographed everything, that he took a bite from every dish on the table while she went to get her camera. And because he was looking for validation, he shared the incident on the internet forum Reddit.

Who’s the crazy one here?

He did this under the subreddit AITA, a kind of question: ‘Am I The Asshole?’ We can loosely translate this as: ‘Am I The Jerk Here?’. He introduced it with the situation as it had happened: his wife runs a website about cooking and food. She takes photos of their meals and posts them on Instagram. He is annoyed that he always has to wait until she has the perfect photo, with ‘er little things like moving that one fork, taking away that one dish after all, etc.

By then, he says, he has completely lost interest. So when, at one point, she had her entire “cooking project” ready and ran upstairs to get her camera, he filled his plate with a spoonful of every dish. Once downstairs, she saw the damage he had caused and exploded. After that, she stayed angry for a very long time.

And was that anger justified, he wondered, scratching his head..? He was simply hungry! Was He The Jerk Here??

Thrown right back at him

Well, it didn’t take long before an internet army of supporters (of his wife) was ready to wash his ears for him. “Yes, You’re The Jerk Here. It looks like this is her job, or at the very least an important activity for her. Keep a Danoontje handy for the next time you want to act childish.”

Whiner

Another response was: “‘My wife regularly cooks elaborate meals for me that I don’t have to do anything for, not even set the table, except wait until she’s finished, which includes taking photos. I think the ten minutes I had to wait, on top of the hours it took her, is far too high a price to pay. Am I The Jerk Here?’ … Yes. You’re The Jerk Here.”

Not having it

And: “Do you want to eat as soon as you feel like it? Then cook your own food. God, how hard can it be to spread some bread? You benefit from her work, and yes, You’re The Jerk Here.”

It wasn’t exactly cozy anymore

This went on for quite some time. Is this a familiar phenomenon in your household too? I can imagine it’s slightly different when you order food in a restaurant and aren’t even allowed to touch your own plate before your dining companion has photographed it from every angle, but at home it may be a different story, when the photographer is also the cook…
