Well then: Het Verrotte Festival is coming (and yes, you’ll actually want to go!)

Feel completely rotten for two whole days even without Lowlands? You can! Because Het Verrotte Festival is coming, and everything here revolves around fermented foods. From beer and kimchi to chocolate and bread; at Het Verrotte Festival, you’ll learn all about them—and of course, there’s plenty to taste.

Fermentation is a controlled form of rotting and became a major trend among home cooks during corona—more specifically, the lockdowns. Sometimes successfully, but just as often not. Because this technique requires love, time, energy and a little knowledge. Fortunately, you can simply learn how to ferment! It’s as old as the road to Rome, and all our (great-)grandparents did it, but somewhere along the way we lost the knack. What a shame!

From failed experiments to a brilliant idea

So it’s time for a proper fermentation festival! It’s the brainchild of three friends who started tasting their own fermented concoctions together during the lockdowns. They weren’t always of the highest quality and weren’t always great for the smell in the kitchen. Why struggle on for ages when you can simply ask the best chefs how to make something tasty that will keep for a long time? wondered one of them, Joost Aartsen. The other two friends, Vincent Mulders and Jelle Lobbes, completely agreed—and within a week, several food initiatives had joined in.

There’s a funky line-up of the craziest kombuchas, kimchis, sourdough starters, dried sausages, pickles, (ginger) beers and much more deliciousness to taste.

Where? When? What time?

You’ll find Het Verrotte Festival at Totti Beach, a new hospitality and events venue at Overschiestraat 188 in Amsterdam. Het Verrotte Festival takes place on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 August, from 12:00 to 02:00. A ticket costs €9.50 per day (excluding €1 service fee), giving you an entire afternoon and evening of entertainment, including several vendors, live music, workshops, bottled craft beers and a lovely urban beach.
