What is better for the environment: plastic cling film or aluminum foil?

Do you have some leftovers? Throwing them away would be a waste, so you put them in a container and in the fridge. Great for tomorrow! So what is better for covering your food: cling film or aluminum foil?

It may surprise you: aluminum foil is actually extremely bad for the environment. A lot of energy is used in the production of aluminum foil. What’s more, aluminum is generally easy to recycle, but aluminum foil happens to be an exception. So that’s a bad idea.

In the plastic recycling bin

But what about plastic wrap? Of course, plastic is really not good for nature, but if you throw it in the plastic recycling bin, it’s not too bad compared with aluminum foil. The downside of cling film: you can only use it once, and in theory you can carefully unfold aluminum foil and use it a few more times—but who does that?

Put a plate on it

You’re being wonderfully sustainable when you use containers and can find the matching lid in the drawer. You can also use beeswax wraps: fabric with a layer of beeswax that you can use to cover or wrap food. And instead of sandwich bags, these days you can get a kind of folding wrap with a plastic layer on the inside, which can also be recycled endlessly. Put a plate on a bowl of salad, or a saucer on a bowl of pasta, and you’ll be Mother Earth’s best friend.
