Bacteria, or microorganisms, are everywhere. But you can’t see them with the naked eye. Fortunately, the vast majority are harmless or even very useful. Only a few are harmful to our health and can make you ill.

Dishcloth horror

The yellow dishcloth is the dirtiest kitchen item we know. No surprise, because those cloths are anything but fresh. Dishcloths, sponges and tea towels contain by far the most bacteria. Especially when they are damp and warm, bacteria can spread quickly. Tip: rinse the cloth thoroughly and hang it up to dry, for example on the radiator. Dirty cloth? Put it in the wash immediately and wash it at 60 degrees. And above all, don’t leave it scrunched up on the kitchen counter!

Sweltering fridge

Bacteria also find the refrigerator a pleasant place to live. Especially if it isn’t set to the right temperature. The correct temperature is between 4 and 7 degrees. Leftover food stored at too high a temperature can make you seriously ill.

Raw meat

Cross-contamination is common in the kitchen. Bacteria can easily get from raw meat to other food via a knife or chopping board. So it’s important to have several chopping boards at home or to rinse the board thoroughly with hot water. And you know the drill: don’t forget to wash your hands!
