Why an ice cube machine is the best pointless purchase of my life
Are you enjoying the summer as much as we are? Lovely, aren’t these warm days? And not least because of a purchase that initially made me look at my boyfriend with seriously furrowed brows.
My boyfriend is rather impulsive. And so equipment regularly ends up in our home that makes me wonder where we’re supposed to put it and, above all, what on earth it’s good for. Such was the case with his latest acquisition: an ice cube machine.
Not one of those features in a luxury refrigerator. No, no. A standalone appliance. Air fryer size. Um… okay… why? That was the only thing that came out of my mouth. In principle, I’m always in favor of more comfort, but this seemed a bit excessive to me. After all, you can simply buy ice cubes at the supermarket or make them yourself in the freezer. ‘Just trust me,’ my boyfriend said. ‘This is great.’
Ice at all times
I didn’t believe him at all and stoically ignored the thing. Although I have to admit that every now and then I quietly grabbed a few ice cubes. ‘Handy, huh?’ he’d say smugly. Yeah, yeah.
But you can probably see this coming: I’m converted. Co-mpletely converted. Because in this blistering heat, it’s simply an amazing thing. No stress about running out of ice, no need to make more yourself, never too little, never missing out at the supermarket, always cold wine, iced coffee on demand, and even our cat Prins is happy with the daily ice cubes in his water bowl.
Also for picnics
Only for home? Of course not. Not that I take the thing everywhere with me, but I simply fill freezer bags with those ice cubes and keep them in the freezer for picnic days when ice is required. Hello, cool limoncello rosé sangria!
No, it’s a clunky, ugly thing and makes quite a bit of noise, but it’s so chill. Seriously. Conclusion: the ice cube machine is allowed to stay, and I recommend treating yourself to one too (#nospon).
