Woman Builds a Restaurant for One and It’s Amazing

A picnic table, a daily changing menu, a chef who dares to experiment, and at least one regular customer: that’s Angela’s restaurant. Her kitchen produces broths, sushi, stews, fries, and cakes, but all in miniature, because the restaurant on her doorstep is for… squirrels!

It all started with a wooden picnic table that Angela got from her uncle. She normally works as a restaurant reviewer in Atlanta, but then came lockdown and the restrictions, so there were no more restaurants to review. To cheer her up, he sent her a small unfinished-wood picnic table, intended as a toy for squirrels. Angela put it on her doorstep, placed a few walnuts on it, and when she looked again half an hour later, a squirrel was munching on the nuts.

Ha, an idea! Angela started a restaurant for one, the first and only restaurant for squirrels. She researched what squirrels like to eat and decorated the picnic table with a tiny tablecloth and an even smaller plant. A miniature menu, small bamboo bowls to serve the food in, a barbecue, and even petit cutlery: Angela went all in. And every day, the same squirrel comes to eat what she makes for him. She calls him Thelonious and even built a sushi bar for him, because she misses eating at Japanese restaurants herself so much. She made the tiny sushi by pressing a sliver of cooked vegetable onto a soft grain of rice.

No, no mushrooms

What has she learned from her restaurant for one? That Thelonious doesn’t like mushrooms, although according to Wikipedia he shouldn’t be lacking them. Blueberries, on the other hand, and nuts, he loves to eat. She has to be careful not to feed him too much, because squirrels can eat until they – literally – burst apart. That squirrels also eat snails, and that she refuses to cook them. That cooking for a squirrel is just as much fun as cooking for guests, and perhaps even more fun. Her Instagram is overflowing with adorable photos of the squirrel at his table, and while her cat is slowly going crazy over the little creature he so desperately wants to sink his claws into, Angela happily concludes that with her one-squirrel restaurant, she can get through lockdown just fine.
