YES: Fair Trade MSC tuna salad is finally available in supermarkets
Amsterdam-based company Fish Tales, known for seafood chef and cookbook author Bart van Olphen, is the first company in the Netherlands to launch supermarket tuna salad that is not only genuinely delicious, but also made with tuna that has been sustainably caught and processed.
Tuna salad, love it. And I’m not the only one, because canned tuna is one of the most popular fish products worldwide. The downside is that by far the majority of canned tuna does not come from sustainable sources. When I make tuna salad at home, for example for an ultimate tuna melt, I always buy Fish Tales tins of tuna. This tuna is caught by pole and line; they only work with fisheries that operate in this sustainable and traditional way.
Two types of tuna salad
I consider supermarket tuna salad—call me a snob—an absolute no go. Not only because the tuna in it is not caught by pole and line, but also because of the excessive use of sweet mayonnaise. Fish Tales has now launched two tuna salads: a classic tuna salad and a spicy variety, and both contain 50% sustainably pole-and-line-caught skipjack tuna.
The salads contain delicious, chunky pieces of tuna, and the mayonnaise used does not leave a sweet aftertaste. The spicy variety, based on the recipe for the traditional Maldivian Mas Uni tuna salad, is a salad with a real bite. thanks to the use of coconut, lime and fresh curry leaves. Delicious on a warm pita or on a cracker.

The two MSC-certified tuna salads (natural and spicy) have been available from today (21 February 2022) at almost all Albert Heijn stores and cost €2.49 per salad.
