This liquor store started out in 1973 as a wine bar. With the help of his son Jan Besseling, the owner expanded the range to include beers and spirits. Jan is still the owner, and his son Kasper is being prepared to take over the reins in due course. They can help you with any question and know how to give good advice when you need it. The shop still looks just as it did in the past, with striped awnings and the same old cash register.

Kanaalstraat is full of Moroccan bakeries, and one of the best is Al Kautar. Besides stocking up on bread to take home, you can also find good snacks there. Tip: the puff pastry snack with fish filling.

This butcher shop is one of the few horse butchers still left in the Netherlands, and has been run by the Van Beek family for three generations. The horse sausage is highly recommended, and is taken warm from the kettle. But there are plenty more delicious things waiting for you in the display counter, such as tender horse steak.

With a range made up of products from 21 different countries and a second branch on Twijnstraat, this is not your average Turkish shop. The business is run by three brothers. There is fresh aioli and large bins filled with rice, nuts and grains. You can cut your own portion of fresh feta from the large block, and you have also come to the right place for oils and vinegar.
