You’ll Want This Too: Naskip’s Absurdly Delicious Chicken Sandwich

As you know, we love going out to find the tastiest things to eat and drink, and consequently we come across absurdly good sandwiches all too often. We really want you to try them too, because the more people who enjoy them, the better! This time: the best fried chicken sandwich we’ve had in ages…

Is it a chicken burger, you ask? Well, not in the sense that it’s not a patty made from ground chicken. So what is it? The tastiest tender pieces of fillet, surrounded by a mega-crispy, crunchy coating, with some good Surinamese pickles and the best hot sauce east of Paramaribo, all on a very fresh, soft, big bun. And where can you get it?

Naskip is a household name

At Naskip on Amsterdam’s Dapperstraat, where the Dappermarkt is also held. After almost sixty years of experience in Suriname, where the first Naskip opened in 1962 and where there are now six locations, the family business had the brilliant idea of opening a branch in Amsterdam in 2019. Fairly new, then, in a city where the chicken competition can certainly be called fierce.

Lockdown burgers

It probably escaped no one’s notice that during the hospitality lockdowns of 2020, fast-food concepts sprang up as quickly as you could say “gourmet burger.” Many traditional hospitality businesses pushed their boundaries and adapted their menus to become more flexible and cut costs, also responding to consumers’ newfound desire during the coronavirus pandemic to quickly pick up or have some comfort food delivered.

That resulted in many happy (temporary) transitions in the capital, such as toasties from Paindemie (actually Brasserie Maris Piper), chicken burgers at 4850, and sour-meat fries at Gebroeders Hartering. All fairly high-end places where, in “normal” times, you would sit down for a three-course meal with a beautiful bottle of wine. (And we’d very much like to return to those too, no matter how much we love their interim foods!)

Plain and simple, but oh so delicious

But Naskip has never been fancy. It’s a no-nonsense family business whose red, white and blue design perhaps half-winks at that one major fried chicken giant, and where the sandwiches are made and wrapped with care and love. It’s a lively place in Amsterdam East, and during the few minutes you have to wait for your freshly fried chicken sandwich, we recommend stepping outside to soak up the quintessential Amsterdam market atmosphere. And then the sandwich arrives!

What’s in this is so delicious!

That hot sauce gives you wings

With the most delicious homemade hot sauce, this chicken sandwich is truly a top-notch experience. You can also order it non-spicy, but why would you? Okay, perhaps if you’re under fourteen; after that, we think you can handle a little heat. Fun detail: the hot sauce is such a local celebrity that it’s served on KLM and Surinam Airways flights from Suriname! The sauce is also sold separately by the bottle at the shop. Made fresh, and it lasts a long time.

So: make a beeline for Amsterdam’s Dapperstraat, because this sandwich will make you downright (very) happy.
