Nachos: the ultimate snack

As far as we’re concerned, when it comes to nachos: more is more. Bring on that enormous oven-baked platter. Filled right to the brim, please. This is where you can eat the best ones in Amsterdam.

Good nachos, as far as we’re concerned, should be covered with melted cheese layer by layer. A portion with cheese sprinkled only on top is disqualified from the outset. Every bite should have cheese. What’s more, plenty of good salsa, sour cream and guacamole should be served alongside. Finely sliced chillies, tomato, beans, jalapeños, fresh coriander and other extras make us even happier.
Waterkant
These nachos are pretty legendary. For many, this is the place for the ultimate fix. You can drink beer while dangling your legs over the water. What makes them so good? They don’t skimp at all on the cheese, sour cream, salsa and guacamole.
Harlem
Harlem on Haarlemmerstraat is always packed with a lovely mix of tourists, local residents and students. The terrace is small, so fight for a spot. The nachos are famous in Amsterdam. They’re placed on your table straight from the oven with so many toppings that you can no longer see the chips through all the cheese. And that’s exactly what you want.
Hard Rock Café
Of course, we’d never send you to Hard Rock Café if the nachos weren’t really amazing. But they are, so you simply have to go to Max Euweplein at least once to try them. Do it for the nachos. They’re loaded. Lots and lots of cheese, sour cream and beans. As an extra, you can top the whole thing with steak or chicken. Order one portion; four people can eat from it.
Bar Baarsch
You can choose from classic, minced meat and pulled pork. Now, I love pulled pork, but for an ultimate platter of nachos, minced meat wins me over. So, an enormous dish appears on the table, and two people can easily eat their fill from it. It doesn’t look particularly cheesy, but that’s because the dish has been built up very carefully, layer by layer. Plenty of sour cream, salsa and guacamole (the latter two are blended smooth, making them very dip-friendly, so your chips are less likely to break). The minced meat is well seasoned. There’s also raw red onion mixed through it (not too much), pickled jalapeño and strips of raw bell pepper. The latter makes me hesitate, but it is incredibly tasty.
