The largest wine museum has opened
Next summer, we will all travel to the city of Bordeaux. Because this week La Cité du Vin opened its doors. A futuristic structure shaped like swirling wine on the banks of the Garonne. Heaven on earth for every wine lover.
Nothing like La Cité du Vin (the City of Wine) exists anywhere else in the world. But how happy we are that it is finally here – after seven years of construction. A unique and immersive experience in which wine comes to life in all its forms. A place where every sense is continuously stimulated. Many major names from the international wine world, such as American wine journalist Robert Parker (the one behind the famous Parker Points), were therefore happy to become ambassadors for the project.
Plenty to see, smell and taste
On all ten floors of the iconic building – somewhere between a museum and an amusement park – you can see, smell and taste to your heart’s content. And it is not only their own French creations that receive attention; wines and wine regions from the rest of the world are also extensively highlighted. Wine through the ages, from all cultures and civilisations. And with the incredible range of exhibitions, films, tastings, restaurants, wine shops and workshops, I don’t think you will ever want to leave.
50 open wines
On the top floor you will find the Belvedère, the so-called observation post. This 360° view over Bordeaux symbolises a window overlooking the region, but also the rest of the wine world. Here, beneath an immense chandelier made of thousands of wine bottles and at a gigantic – how could it be otherwise – oak bar, you can enjoy views of the city and its endless, famous vineyards.
After being immersed in the joy of wine for floor after floor, you naturally end up at the Latitude20 wine bar on the ground floor. With more than 50 different wines by the glass, gourmet snacks and a wine cellar filled with wines from more than 70(!) countries.
Juice tastings
To visit all this beauty, you pay just € 20. Even children (€ 8) are more than welcome. Because the – still – alcohol-free audience is also entertained with, among other things, special juice tastings and flavour and aroma workshops.
