An Ode to the Saucijzenbroodje (and Where to Get the Best One!)

Expensive products or complicated preparation methods are an easy way to impress everyone, but sometimes it’s a simple, humble product that you’re actually craving the most. Right? That’s why today we’re paying tribute to a product you can find on every street corner: the saucijzenbroodje. And we’re also sharing a tip for the best one in Amsterdam.

There’s some disagreement in the editorial office, because having a colleague from Den Bosch immediately sparks an intense sausage-roll battle: saucijzenbroodjes versus worstenbroodjes. Yes, I’m also very happy to tuck the latter away, and I’ve even made them myself with the DIY kit, which lets you make those legendary rolls at home. But I was born north of the rivers, so my heart belongs to the saucijzenbroodje, so greasy that it leaves a delicious coating on your fingers. A coating of pure happiness.

Every Calorie More Than Worth It

Anything wrapped in puff pastry has a special place in my heart anyway. Add sausage meat and you have the perfect snack, right? It’s so greasy that afterwards you can barely walk and think you’ll never need to eat another one, but oh, how you enjoyed every bite. Every calorie more than worth it. It’s best when warm, but I actually won’t say no to a cold one on the go either.

The Best One in Amsterdam

You’ll find the saucijzenbroodje of your dreams at Kwekkeboom; this Amsterdam pastry chef’s Black Angus saucijzenbroodje is truly divine. It has been a classic among Amsterdammers for years. Why is it so good? Because the puff pastry is wonderfully crisp and flaky, while the seasoned minced meat is spread generously inside the roll. In that case, €2.90 isn’t a crazy price, if you ask me. Our snackspert awarded it the maximum score of 5 stars.

From HEMA

But as a true saucijzenbroodjes lover, I also sometimes get one from Albert Heijn and warm it up at home in the oven. HEMA has a delicious box of 4 baked saucijzenbroodjes. Just forget all those artisan cheeses and Spanish hams every now and then, serve your friends saucijzenbroodjes (prefer to make them yourself? With this saucijzenbroodjes recipe, you’re guaranteed 100% success), or serve up a fun saucijzenbroodjes party pie, and they’ll be eternally grateful.
