Suffering from hay fever? These ingredients help with your symptoms

Spring brings flowers and lambs, but for many, spring also means hay fever. You’re probably already doing everything you can to reduce your symptoms, but we’ve put together a list of foods that may help ease them a little.

Turmeric
This spice has a natural antihistamine effect, which means it counteracts the symptoms of allergic reactions. You’ll often find turmeric in Indian curries or generally in Indian or Indonesian cuisine, but you can also add it to soup or brew it into tea. Another delicious option: golden milk!
Fish
Oily fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel is also good for you during hay fever season. Oily fish contains lots of omega-3, which has an anti-inflammatory effect. That’s why eating several portions of fish a week could ease hay fever symptoms. An idea for tonight: this super-quick frozen salmon.
Garlic
It may make you smell, but garlic helps keep your airways less congested. So it helps with sneezing and blowing your nose, meaning that after eating lots of garlic, you’ll be a little more free from the snot. So go ahead and chop garlic, or simply use whole cloves in this fantastic dish of chicken with 40 (!) cloves of garlic.
Pineapple
Pineapple not only contains lots of vitamins that you need anyway when you’re ill, but also a large amount of bromelain. This is an anti-inflammatory. A good reason to eat plenty of it.
Vitamin C
Eating more vegetables and fruit is always a good idea. Kiwi and broccoli (why not try this delicious broccoli and spinach soup by Yvette van Boven) are high in vitamin C, for example. It’s an antioxidant and helps ease symptoms. Unfortunately, you won’t be completely cured, but every little bit helps.
